RoadThis is the first of a series of posts that will be aimed at growth and development, but out with the work setting. I know that you may already thing of your future in holistic terms, but many people only focus on their work, or their personal life when they look to improve things. I just wanted to post this quick “thought-provoker” as I think that the weekend (and for me specifically Sunday) is a great time to sit down and work on where is it you’re going. I don’t mean in any formal, detailed, planning way. I just mean in a naturally, almost day-dreaming way.

You may come up with some things that you want to take further or not. You may want to put some of them through my simple planning methodology, or you may not. But at least it will allow you to be looking forward and every week doing a sense check on where you are going. It’s also a good time to have a more detailed think about the specific things you want to achieve in the coming week.

Something for you to try

Get yourself a cup of tea or coffee (or maybe a glass of something stronger if it’s later in the day). Find yourself somewhere quite to think. The garden can be good in the summer. And then give yourself ten to twenty minutes to do the following.

  • Think about all the different aspects of your life, and what you’d like them to be like.
  • Let your mind wander quietly. If something comes to mind that you feel is more than a daydream, maybe write it down and work on it later.
  • Have a think about what you want to achieve in the coming week. This may be part of a trusted system like GTD or it may not, but get some specific, important things in your list of things to do for the week.

We can all find ourselves in a constant rat-race of work and get that feeling of going nowhere. Don’t let that be because you haven’t spent any time really thinking about where you want to be.
