Inspection

In the last post we looked further into what the analogy of the two wolves actually means. Hopefully you have decided on your method of recording things that you notice. This will greatly enhance the benefits as you go through this process. If you haven’t read this post, go back and do it now. Now we need to start trying to understand how we feed them. Especially if we are to do anything about influencing the outcome of their battle.

The fortunate thing about this is that all you are going to do is notice your own thoughts and feelings. The unfortunate thing about that is that this is something most people are not used to doing. However, with practice, it will become a lot easier and your level of awareness of what you are thinking and feeling with get better and better. This will, in turn, have a dramatic impact on your ability to facilitate change in a lot of aspects of your life.

But let’s focus on the wolves first.

Something to try

We are going to start really simply. (remember the Be Better principle) In this superb video, Brendan Buchard describes how to set up habits using triggers with something that most (if not all) of us have: our phones.

All I want you to do is to set up a few alarms or reminders on your phone. Make them at a time of day that you know you will be able to focus on the task. For me this will be around 8:00, 13:00 and 18:00. You can set up 2 or 4, but don’t make it any less than 2.

All you need to do is when the alarm goes off, do the following:

  1. Stop doing whatever you are doing at the time – if you can’t, then finish it off as quickly as you can.
  2. Get your chosen method of recording things (from the previous post). It may be worthwhile making sure you can always put your hands on this
  3. Ask yourself these two questions “What am I think right now?” and “What am I feeling right now?”
  4. It doesn’t matter what the answers are, just record them.
  5. Go back to doing whatever you were doing.

You may find this clunky at first, or feel self conscious about it, but trust me, do this a few times a day, for as little as a week, and you’ll find something wonderful happening. You find it easier, when your reminder goes off, to know what you’re thinking and feeling. But more than this, you will find your self ‘knowing’ or ‘acknowledging’ what you are thinking, or how you are feeling at other times too. This is the start of your journey into real self-awareness. This is the first step in not only being in charge of your wolves, but being in charge of your destiny. However, remember you have to put the work in. All I’m asking you to do is set a few reminders, and ask a couple of questions when they go off. You can do that right?

In the next post, we will begin to focus our awareness on specific thoughts and feelings which are feeding one or other of our wolves.

Let me know in the comments what kind of things you are doing, what you called your wolves, or what method you’re using to record your thoughts. Please, pass this on to your friends, or anyone you think would benefit from feeding their good wolf more. Use the social media links to spread the word.

If you have not already done so, sign up for email notification so that you will be informed when a new post is published. Share this with people you know, who would like to Be Better! And remember to use the links above to share/like and post to the various social media sites.
